David Tubb, winner of the NRA's 2004 Long Range Rifle Championships, shown here with the Leech Cup. |
One of the things that makes David Tubb a great champion is his reflex for bouncing back from adversity. At the NRA's 2004 Long Range Rifle Championships, he demonstrated that reflex, and demonstrated it in spades. At this year's Long Range event, Tubb bounced back from an unaccustomed second place in the High Power Rifle Championships and won the 2004 Long Range crown -- the NRA's preeminent set of rifle championships. His winning score was an unprecedented perfect tally -- 1450 points of 1450 possible, plus 101 tie-breaking X-ring hits. It happened August 13-16, at the Ohio National Guard's Camp Perry training site near Port Clinton.
Tubb began his victory run with wins in two of the three 600-yard matches that lead into the Long Range championship. Jeremy Hurd, from Littleton, Colorado, won the third, out "X-ing" Tubb 200-17X to the latter's 200-15X.
Then, at the start of the 1000-yard firing, Tubb really bore down. In Leech Cup competition, he parlayed a 200-12X score for his relay into a slot in the shoot-off. (In 1000-yard matches, fired over the course of a day, a 10-shot shoot-off is used to determine the match winner. The practice provides uniform conditions of wind and light for all top contenders.) His score in the shoot-off, a 100-4X, put him in a shot-for-shot elimination contest against another of America's top competitive rifle shooters, Nancy Tompkins-Gallagher. The elimination went 15 shots before fatigue began to affect Gallagher and she shot a nine against Tubb's 15th 10-point hit, giving him the victory. It was Tubb's first win in Leech Cup competition.
Leech Cup firing is done using rifles equipped with metallic (non-magnifying) sights. Concurrent with Leech competition, two other matches are fired: the Porter Trophy -- for shooters using military-style rifles -- and the Andrus Trophy -- for shooters using rifles that meet criteria for use in the Palma international team challenge match. Army Specialist Karyn Manges won the 2004 Porter Trophy with a relay-high score of 189-6X and a shoot-off winning 98-4X. A member of the US Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU) at Fort Benning, Manges shot an M16 rifle built in the unit's gunsmith shop to secure her win. The Andrus Trophy for 2004 went to North Carolina's Kent Reeve with a relay-high 200-11X and a shoot-off score of 97-4X.
Teams in the Leech Cup course of fire compete for the Roumanian Trophy. The Roumanian, the only NRA trophy given by a reigning monarch, went to a royal family among NRA competitive shooters -- the Tompkins-Gallagher family from Prescott, Arizona: Mid Tompkins, Nancy Tompkins-Gallagher, and her daughters Michelle and Sherri. Coached by Mid, the foursome tallied a 792-40X of 800 points possible and won the ornate silver cup for 2004.
Like the Leech, the Wimbledon Cup has been an NRA trophy since the 1870s. Also for 1000-yard shooting, Wimbledon rules permit use of "any sight," including telescopes. Concurrent with the Wimbledon, military rifle shooters compete for the Farr Trophy, and Palma rifle shooters vie for the "Doc" Aiken Trophy.
The Wimbledon Cup went to a veteran. Michelle Gallagher fired a relay score of 200-16X and cleaned the shoot-off with 100-8X to win her fourth Wimbledon contest. The Farr Trophy, named in honor of a shooter in 1921 who set a record that has not been equaled to this day, went to Sfc Grant Singley of the AMU. Like Manges in the Porter, Singley shot an AMU-built M16 rifle to win. His scores: a relay high of 195-14X and a shoot-off win at 98-4X. Kent Reeve reentered the winner's column in the Aiken Trophy match, but not before having to shoot a one-round, shot-for-shot elimination.
Wimbledon teams try for honors in the Herrick Trophy Team Match. The Herrick is another massive silver trophy originally donated by Ohio Governor Myron Herrick in 1907, the year in which Camp Perry opened. Arizona's "Family" -- the Tompkins-Gallaghers -- doubled up in 1000-yard team firing, posting a 792-39X for the win.
The final leg of the Long Range Championship aggregate was David Tubb's. To complete his record of perfect scores for all the matches, Tubb posted a 450-25X for the 45-shot course that is The Palma Individual Trophy Match. It gave him a 1450-101X for the aggregate and the Tompkins Trophy that represents the championship. It also gave him a win in the 850-point Canadian Cup aggregate. Service rifle honors, The Billy C. Atkins Trophy, went to Marine S/Sgt Jerome Bostick. And the Sierra Bullets Trophy, for the Palma Rifle win, went to Kent Reeve.
