Kent Reeve of Cary, NC, Wins the 2006 NRA National Long Range Rifle Championships
Kent Reeve of Cary, NC, won his first-ever National Championship with a score of 1436-73X during the NRA National Long Range Rifle competition at the NRA National Rifle and Pistol Matches held at Camp Perry, Ohio, from Aug. 11-14.

Only two points separated the top three overall scores. John Whidden of Nashville, Georgia, placed second with a score of 1434-74X. SFC Norman Anderson of Columbus, Georgia, took the third spot with a score of 1432-72X.

Going into the final day of competition, Reeve overcame a three-point deficit to become the national champion. His score of 440-23X in the Palma Individual Trophy Match gave him the overall title. "It was very difficult," said Reeve. "I just wanted to shoot well and to see where things shook out."

As for his secret to success, Reeve surmised that his high level of experience shooting Palma rifles might have done the trick. "Maybe that’s what made the difference," he said. "Maybe it was just my turn. I had a good week, and I had a lot of fun getting here."

Michelle Gallagher of Prescott, Arizona, was the Women's National Champion. She posted a score of 1424-64X. Gallagher was also the high-scoring woman in the Long Range Service Rifle Championship and the Canadian Cup Trophy, which is presented to the high-scoring competitor in the NRA Long Range Championship.

The High Service Rifle champion winner was SFC Grant Singley of Smiths, Alabama. Singley shot a score of 1391-45X. The High Grand Senior champion was Randall Victory of Indianapolis, Indiana who finished with a score of 1332-33X.

The High Junior was Kyle Liebetrau of Cross Plains, Wisconsin, who posted a score of 1411-45X. Larry Miller of Iron River, Wisconsin was the High Senior with a score of 1423-56X.

Approximately 350 competitors shot during the four-day contest at ranges from 600 yards to 1,000 yards in the prone position.
