NRA Expands Personal Protection Training
NRA is expanding its personal protection training materials and course offerings in response to the needs of a growing number of citizens who choose to carry a concealed handgun for personal protection.

NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection Outside the Home The most recent addition is the new NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection Outside the Home. This 356-page, fully-illustrated guide, which follows the popular NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection in the Home, covers such topics as:

  • Concealed carry techniques
  • Presentation of a firearm from concealment
  • Defensive shooting skills and strategies
  • Safety
  • Legal aspects of gun ownership and self-defense
  • The aftermath of a defensive shooting

While the book is available now, a new basic course on the same topic, taught by NRA certified instructors, is also under development and should be accepting students by the end of the year.

"The National Rifle Association has been at the forefront in securing the rights of law-abiding Americans to carry concealed handguns for personal protection," said Bill Poole, Director of NRA’s Education and Training Division. "Now, 48 states recognize this fundamental right and have procedures in place to allow their residents the means with which to defend themselves. This publication, and the NRA course that will follow soon, are invaluable steps toward learning to responsibly and securely carry a concealed firearm," he added.

The NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection Outside the Home is now available at a cost of $19.95 for NRA members (non-member price is $27.95) by calling 800-336-7402, or online at the NRA Program Materials Center. Ask for Item Number ES30000; shipping and handling charges apply.

Basics of Personal Protection in the Home Yet another new offering is a DVD version of the Basics of Personal Protection in the Home, the most popular of all NRA's basic courses. Available for just $19.95, the DVD can be played on a computer or a television, and watched from beginning to end or in specific sections. Topics covered include:

  • Making you and your home safe
  • Awareness levels
  • Responding to a possible break-in
  • Avoiding confrontations

  • If you must shoot
  • The aftermath of a defensive shooting
