Steve Reiter Wins the 2004 NRA .45 Pistol Championship
Steve Reiter, from Sparks, Nevada, has won the National Rifle Association's 2004 National .45 Caliber Pistol Championship. Reiter's score was 874 points plus 43 tie-breaking hits, called Xs. The contest, fired July 17, at Camp Perry, Ohio represents the final leg of the NRA's National Pistol Championship tournament, held at the historic Ohio National Guard training site, July 13-17. The .45 Championship is a 900-point aggregate of four pistol matches, as follows:

  • A slowfire match - 20 shots at 50 yards range, in 10-shot strings, 10 minutes per string;
  • A timed fire match - 20 shots at 25 yards range, in 5-shot strings, 20 seconds per string;
  • A rapid fire match - 20 shots at 25 yards range, in 5-shot strings, 10 seconds per string;
  • A National Match Course (NMC) - 10 shots slow, 10 shots timed, and 10 shots rapid fire.

Close behind Reiter's lead Chris Sobers, from Red Hook, New Jersey, finished second at 868-38X. Air Force Colonel Joe Chang, from Kathleen, Georgia, took third at 867-26X.

Reiter's .45 Caliber victory moved him into the second place spot in the aggregate to three 900-point matches that make up the NRA National Pistol Championship and nailed down championship honors in the Civilian and Senior categories as well. Reiter, who considers the .45 caliber pistol his strong suite, took advantage of his own strengths on a day when weather conditions (strong, steady winds blowing diagonally across the range) hampered the competition He not only posted a strong winning score for the .45 Championship, he also closed some of the gap between his aggregate and that of Brian Zins, finishing only 14 points behind the winner.

In team competition, the Army Marksmanship Unit stepped to the fore as their "Blue" team, Sfc Roger Jacobson, S/Sgt Thomas Rose, Sgt Adam Sokolowski, and Specialist Seam Watson, coached by Sfc Peter Jones posted a team-high 1147-45X to garner the Colt Trophy for 2004. In other team results, a junior foursome from nearby Ottawa County, Ohio, the home county for Camp Perry, won its third junior category team match of the 2004 championships.
