New Champions Crowned at NRA Long Range Championships
The 2005 NRA Long Range Rifle Championships, held at Camp Perry, Ohio, August 12-15, brought some unfamiliar names to the top of the lists. The Long Range Champion, for example, is Norman Crawford, of Fayetteville, North Carolina. Crawford has been shooting for some years, but "this year, everything just fell into place," he said. Crawford's winning aggregate was 1444-68X, of 1450 points possible. With a couple of exceptions, most of the other matches that make up the Long Range Championships went to shooters unaccustomed to the winner's podium at Camp Perry.

NRA Long Range matches are shot at ranges of 600 to 1,000 yards, using rifles that fall into three categories -- Match Rifle, Service Rifle and Palma Rifle -- and with either metallic sights or "any sights" (scopes). The Long Range champion is the highest-scoring individual in six of the 10 fired matches. (See the official program of the National Rifle & Pistol Matches for more information.)

Among the veteran champions who did return to the winner's podium were Nancy Tompkins and daughter Michelle Gallagher, both of Prescott, Arizona, who both made the shoot-off for the Leech Cup, a 1,000-yard match open to any rifle with metallic sights.

"Michelle can win [the Leech]," said Nancy, "and take a big step toward being the only competitor ever to win both Leech and Wimbledon in the same year -- twice. But, she's going to have to beat her mother to do it -- and the Leech Cup is my match."

And it was. With a shoot-off score of 100-3X, Nancy Tompkins bested all comers and put her name on the Leech Cup winners' list for 2005. Michelle Gallagher turned around and won the 2005 Wimbledon Cup, a 1,000-yard match where any sight is allowed, with a 200-15X and 99-5X in the shoot-off.

Shooters firing service rifles in the Leech and Wimbledon matches also won honors. The Porter Trophy, for service rifle competitors in the Leech, went to Scott Anzivino, a civilian from Norfolk, Massachusetts, at 182-5X and a shoot-off score of 93-2X. In the Farr Trophy Match (for service rifles on the Wimbledon course) the winner was Sfc Kyle Ward, of the Army Marksmanship Unit with 195-5X in his relay and a 96-3X in the shoot-off.

The Andrus Trophy goes to the high-scoring Palma Rifle shooter in the Leech Cup Match. This year it was Bruce O'Brien, from McAlester, Oklahoma, at 199-10X. The Palma Rifle shooter in the Wimbledon wins the "Doc" Aiken Trophy. This year, with a score of 198-8X, plus a 100-4X in the shoot-off, the trophy went to Kent Reeve, of Cary, North Carolina. Reeve also posted the 449-point (of 450) winning score in the Palma Individual Rifle Match.

Long Range teams compete for the Roumanian Trophy (over the Leech Cup course of fire) and the Herrick Trophy (on the Wimbledon course), plus special category trophies in each match. A summary of team results is included in the following score chart.

Long Range firing completes each year’s National High Power Rifle Championship.
